Profitant d'un court séjour à New-York et avant de m'envoler vers les Bahamas, je suis descendu sur Tampa pour une visite de 2-3 jours aux lamentins de Crystal River.

L'hiver, ces charmants mammifères se regroupent dans les sources chaudes (23°C) de la région de Kings Bay (Homosassa springs, Kings spring, 3 sisters springs, ...).

Aller nager avec eux est facile ; de nombreux opérateurs proposent des "manatee tours".

Nous avions choisi de loger au Plantation Inn & Golf Resort, qui est situé à 5mn de Kings spring, au bord de la rivière et qui possède son propre centre de plongée.

Nous avons fait 2 sorties, l'une en plongée bouteille d'abord sur Kings spring : départ dans la rivière, parmi les lamentins puis descente dans une petite grotte sans grand intérêt, si ce n’est le petit frisson pseudo spéléo de la plongée sous voûte, mais pas bien méchant : grotte de 20-25m de long, environ, descente à -14m, mais l’entrée et la sortie se font au travers d’une petite ouverture où on ne passe qu’un par un. Rien donc de bien intéressant à l’intérieur, mais d’énormes bancs de poissons à l'entrée et à la sortie.

Ensuite, au choix snorkel ou reprise des blocs à 3 sisters springs : encore des lamentins et la remontée d’une rivière qui conduit par différents bras à 3 sources : jeux de lumière dans une eau parfaitement limpide.
Le lendemain retour à Kings spring, en snorkel cette fois, pour 2h de batifolage avec des lamentins câlins, sympa !

After a short stay in NYC, and before flying to the Bahamas, I went down to Tampa, for a 2-3 days visit to Crystak River's manatees.

In winter, those friendly mammals flock in the warm springs (23°C) in the vicinity of Kings Bay (Homosassa springs, Kings spring, 3 sisters springs, ...).

Getting to swim with them is fairly easy, a number of operators propose "manatee tours".

We chose to stay at the Plantation Inn & Golf Resort, which is just 5mn away from Kings spring, just at the riverside, with a diving center inside the resort.

We went to see the manatees twice. The first day, we went scuba diving to Kings spring (and Kings cave) : we started in the river with the manatees and went down inside a small cave, rather uninterresting, except the "chill" of fake cave diving : the cave was about 20m long, 14 m deep, but to get in and out you had to go through a quite small opening, only one by one. Nothing really nice inside, but we met huge fish schools when getting in and out of the cave ...

After that, we went to 3 sisters springs (we could either scuba dive or snorkel, there) : more manatees, and swimming upstream a small river, leading to 3 different springs : very nice light effects in a pristine clear water.

The next day, back to Kings spring, for 2 hours of snorkelling with very friendly manatees. Cool !
