KANGAROO ISLAND (Dec 2008)
Western River Cove
Looking for leafy sea dragon ... desperately !
|
|
We had planned only two dives, but we had booked about six months in advance since there is no dive shop on the island ; the only dive operator : http://www.kidivingsafaris.com/ only works through advance reservations. They come to pick you up from a secluded beach of the north coast (Western river cove) -more than 90 km from Kingscote or American River, where most of the hotels are located (!). They come to the beach with a small tender and row back to the boat. The good surprise is that the boat and all the equipment are brand new (the wet suits still have their price tags on !). There are 5 of us (divers) ; 2 snorkellers are already on board ; there is also the captain and a DM, a canadian guy, quite cool and friendly. |

habituellement ! |
About a 30 mn boat ride to get to the dive site. The sea is calm, but as we are quite close to the shoreline, the undertow looks pretty perceptible ; underwater, we'll see if it's strong or not ... OK. We get ready and go. Our goal : the "leafy sea dragon" ! Water is cool (about 16° C), quite cooler than in PNG ; fortunately, the wetsuits that they rent fit just right for us and are thick enough (7.5 mm). 1st dive : we'll go round and round among algae looking for that silly dragon. No success ! Undertow is quite strong indeed and as we swim around, we go forward 3m and then backwards 2m. Well, no "leafy", but I nevertheless take a few pictures ; the underwater atmosphere is quite different from what I'm used to. 2nd dive : well ... same thing. No "leafy" ! We'll have been searching thoroughly, more than 60mn, but in vain ... However, we were lucky as two "eastern blue gropers" (Achoerus viridis), which are not actually gropers (Family Serranidae) but wrasses (Family Labridae), stayed with us during the whole dive. Well, too bad, no leafy sea dragon, I'll come back empty handed (if I may say so), but we'll have been doing two nice dives, a little cool all right, but quite interesting. |

But Kangaroo island is worth spending much more than one day. We stayed 5 days there : sea lions, koalas, colourful birds, wallabies and magnificent beaches are just some of the most spectacular attractions of the island ... If you ever come to be in Adelaide, don't miss a short trip to Kangaroo island, you won't regret it ! |
