Roca Partida : un rocher nu, au milieu de nulle part, couvert de guano ! Mur vertical qui plonge sur une plateforme à 80m, puis ... on ne sait pas trop : 2.000 m ? 4.000 m ? Rocher battu par les vagues du grand large, générées par une houle qui peut atteindre une dizaine de mètres de haut. Tout autour, sévissent souvent des courants violents, imprévisibles, dangereux. |
Roca Partida : a bare rock, in the middle of nowhere, covered with guano ! A vertical drop-off, plunging down to a platform some 80m deep, farther down ... nobody really knows : 2,000 m ? 4,000 m ? The waves of the outer ocean lash against the rock where the swell can be as high as 10m. All around, one can find very strong currents, often unpredictable and dangerous. |

Par chance, nous y plongerons dans des conditions certes parfois un peu mouvementées, mais remarquablement calmes pour l'endroit ... L'île la plus proche est à 70 milles et encore faut-il viser la bonne direction (!) ; mieux vaut ne pas se laisser prendre par le courant et toujours garder la roche en vue ; parachute obligatoire ! |
Fortunately, we will dive there with sea conditions most certainly not exactly calm, but rather quiet for the spot ... The nearest island is some 70 nautic miles away (if you go in the right direction !) : you'd better not let you be caught by the crrent and should always keep the rock in view. Signal sausage mandatory ! |

Ici, c'est vraiment le royaume du bleu ; beaucoup de prédateurs en chasse : carangues diverses, thons, ... mais aussi requins (silver tips, Galápagos) qui patrouillent le long des parois. Ils sont malheureusement très craintifs et presque impossibles à approcher, sauf les petits pointes blanches de récif, qui s'entassent pêle-mêle dans des "étagères à requins" assez marrantes. Des mantas viennent parfois se balader par ici ; une est restée pendant plus de 20 mn avec nous et les mantas, contrairement aux requins, recherchent volontiers la proximité des plongeurs, pour le plus grand bonheur des photographes. Nous resterons deux jours et ferons là 7 plongées, sans doute les plus intéressantes -et insolites- du séjour. Toutes les photos (exceptées 2 ou 3 "empruntées" à mes compagnons de plongée - malheureusement, je ne sais pas lesquels) ont été prises au Nikon D70 en caisson Ikelite TTL, avec le zoom Nikkor 12-24 DX et avec ou sans deux flashes Ikelite DS125. Bras Ultralight.

Here, it's the pure realm of the deep blue ; a lot of hunting predators : different species of trevallies (or jacks), tunas, ... but also sharks (silver tips, Galápagos) cruising around the rock. Unfortunately, sharks are very shy and it's very difficult to get close to them, execpt for the small white-tip reef sharks that one can find stacked up in a funny way on small rock shelves. Manta rays sometimes come around ; one of them stayed more than 20 mn with us and manta rays, unlike sharks, like the company of divers and often come very close by, which is what photographers like best. We will stay 2 days and will do 7 dives there, probably the most interesting -and unusual- dives of the cruise. All the photographs (except 2 or 3 that I "borrowed" from some of my divng companions - but unfortunately, I don't know who) were shot with a Nikon D70 camera in an Ikelite TLL housing, using a single lmens : the Nikkor 12-24 DX zoom lens and with or without two substrobes Ikelite DS125. Ultralight arms.
