Retour à Phuket après plus de 15 ans et surtout 7 semaines après le Tsunami. Ce qui m'a le plus frappé ce ne sont pas les marques de la catastrophe, qui partout, même à Patong, étaient déjà presque effacées, mais l'incroyable prolifération d'hôtels, de résidences, de boutiques en tous genres (et parfois plus que douteuses). Phuket, jadis un petit paradis, est en train (en fait le mal est déjà fait !) de se transformer en une usine à touristes recherchant les plaisirs les plus variés ... Heureusement, je n'y ai passé que 2 nuits, une avant et une après la croisière. Cela dit, j'ai tout de même été aussi frappé par l'aspect désertique de tout ça : il n'y a personne : les plages, comme les boutiques et restos sont vides ...

Back to Phuket, after more the 15 years and 7 weeks after the Tsunami. What mainly struck me is not so much the signs of the disaster which were everywhere - even in Patong beach- already almost erased, but the incredible proliferation of hotels, residential flats, shops selling almost anything (and more than often offering dubious services). Phuket, not so long ago a small paradise, is now being turned into a huge tourist market, offering any kind of pleasures ... Fortunately, I stayed only 2 nights in Phuket, one before and one after the cruise. I was also struck by the desert aspect of all this area : there are almost no tourists : beaches, restaurants and shops are empty ...

Bref. Courte croisière : 4 jours-4 nuits achetée sur Internet auprès de Sunrise Divers ( http://www.sunrise-divers.com/), mais qui peut s'acheter auprès de nombreux autres intermédiaires, voire en direct auprès de http://www.mermaid-liveaboards.com/ ; les tarifs sont identiques ... 3 jours et demi de plongée, mais 14 plongées dont 3 de nuit. Toutes les plongées effectuées au Nitrox 32 (3$ de supplément ; c'est donné !). Le bateau, le Mermaid II est très confortable (un peu moins que le Mermaid I) et sera rénové l'an prochain alors qu'il est déjà très bien ; ça promet ...

3 days and a half of diving, but 14 dives (including 3 night dives). I did all the dives on EAN 32 (3$ a fill, that's quite cheap !). The vessel, the Mermaid II is very comfortable (a little less than its sister ship the Mermaid I). She will be renovated next year though she's already very cosy. That sounds promising ... |

Nourriture de très bonne qualité et abondante. Nous n'étions que 10 sur ce bateau qui peut accueillir 16, voire 20 plongeurs : 3 DM à bord, un espagnol et deux thaïlandaises. Ambiance ultra cool. Sécu très correcte, bons briefings, zodiac qui patrouille sur les sites ; rien à redire sur l'organisation de la plongée. Et les sites ? Du très médiocre, du convenable et de l'exceptionnel : Les moins intéressants : North Point (Similan #9), visi très médiocre et beaucoup de coraux cassés ; Koh Bon (West Ridge) où, bien que nous ayons aperçu 2 mantas, la visi était épouvantable et là encore, beaucoup de coraux cassés ; Koh Tachaï : certainement le plus décevant, les "bommies" ou "pinnacles", ont ét littéralement dévastés par la vague : il ne reste rien ! L'exceptionnel : Richelieu Rock - bien entendu- vaut à lui seul le voyage !!! Mais aussi Elephant Head Rock et Boulder City (Similan) : très beaux reliefs, bonne visi et gorgones à profusion. Convenable, un peu tout le reste ... Bilan final très satisfaisant. J'étrennais mon nouveau caisson argentique (Hugy pour F80), avec deux optiques ; le Nikkor f/2.8 20mm et le Micro-Nikkor f/2.8 105 mm. Deux flashes : le Ikelite 200 en maître et un Sea&Sea YS90 Duo en slave. Voici quelques clichés.

Food was very good and generous. We were only 10 divers on a boat which could accomodate 16 (even 20) divers : 3 DM on board : one spanish guy and two thaï girls. Atmosphere very cool. Very safe divng : good briefings, ... Very good organization. What about the dive sites ? A few rather poor sites, a few "normal" sites and 2 or 3 truly outstanding dives. Less interesting : North Point (Similan #9), very poor visibility, a lot of broken coral ; Koh Bon (West Ridge) where, even if we saw two mantas there, the visibility was, once again awful and a lot of broken coral as well ; Koh Tachaï, the most disappointing : the "bommies" or "pinnacles" had been totally swept by the tidal wave and almost nothing is left ! Outstanding : Richelieu Rock - of course- is worth the trip for itself !!! But a few other very nice sites : Elephant Head Rock or Boulder City (Similan) : very nice underwater landscape, good visibility, a lot of gorgonian fans. Most of the other sites were quite OK ... The overall assessment is very satisfactory. I used for the first time my brand new Hugy housing for Nikon F80, with two lenses : the f/2.8 20mm Nikkor and the f/2.8 105mm micro-Nikkor. Two substrobes : Ikelite 200 as master strobe, and a Sea & Sea YS90 Duo used as slave. Here are a few pictures...
