Socorro 2007 - Roca Perdita

Voyage de deux semaines, vendu par Fun&Fly, mais organisé par Abyss avec la participation exceptionnelle de Laurent Ballesta. L'intérêt majeur de cette croisière : le gros ! L'archipel de Revillagigedo est perdu en plein Pacifique, à 250 milles de la moindre côte et c'est le royaume du bleu, des grands pélagiques et principalement des mantas géantes, des requins "silver tips", des requins soyeux, des requins Galápagos, des marteaux (pas facile de les voir de près !), des thons, ... mais aussi de toute une faune benthique assez spécifique : anges de Clarion (Holacanthus clarionensis), papillons à nez noir (Johnrandallia nigrirostris), chirurgiens à queue jaune (Prionurus punctatus), mérou cuir (Dermatolepis dermatolepis), poissons cochons mexicains (Bodianus diplotaenia), ... Vol Paris-Mexico avec Aeromexico sans histoire, escale d'une nuit à Mexico et continuation le lendemain matin vers San Jose del Cabo. Tous les participants n'arrivant pas par les mêmes vols, on passera une bonne partie de la journée au Best Western de San Jose, au bord d'une superbe plage de sable doré, battue par les rouleaux assez impressionnants de la mer de Cortez, aux eaux d'un bleu-vert profond.	Two-week journey organized by the Swiss T.O. Abyss , with the exceptional participation of Laurent Ballesta, a well-known French biologist and underwater photographer. The highlight of this cruise : meeting with large pelagic fishes ! The Revillagigedo archipelago is lost in the middle of the Pacific ocean, some 250 nautic miles from any coast, it's the realm of the "deep blue", of giant manta rays, of many species of sharks : silver tips, silky, Galapagos, hammerheads, of hunting tunas, jacks, ... but also of a few endemic species of reef fishes : Clarion angelfishes (Holacanthus clarionensis), blacknosed butterflyfishes (Johnrandallia nigrirostris), yellowtail surgeonfishes (Prionurus punctatus), leather basses (Dermatolepis dermatolepis), Mexican hogfishes (Bodianus diplotaenia, ... Flight from Paris to Mexico City, one night stop in Mexoco City and connecting flight to San Jose del Cabo the next morning. All passengers coming on different flights, we had to spend almost a full day at the Best Western in San Jose, in front of a magnificent golden beach and the very impressive huge waves of the dark blue-green sea of Cortez.

Montée à bord du Nautilus Explorer -un très confortable bateau canadien, habitué aux croisières en Alaska et en Colombie Britannique- vers 17h, où on nous accueille avec un verre de Margarita ...	We were able to get on board of the Nautilus Explorer -a Canadian vessel usually cruising the Alaska and British Columbia coastlines- around 5 pm and were met by the staff and glasses of Margarita ...

On appareillera après le dîner : 30h de navigation avant d'atteindre San Benedicto. Heureusement, l'océan Pacifique, qui bien souvent ne mérite guère son nom, nous épargnera : une légère houle, mais traversée ultra calme ... La suite de la semaine sera au diapason ! Sympa ! Il fait 30° et l'eau est à 24° ... On nous avait annoncé une eau entre 19 et 22°, j'avais donc pris une semi-étanche ; j'ai pas eu froid ! 2 jours et 8 plongées sur San Benedicto, 2 jours et 7 plongées sur Roca Partida, avec des conditions de mer incroyablement clémentes pour le site, (réputé pour ses courants (voire des vortex !), sa houle qui interdit quasiment de tenir des paliers dans la zone des 5m, ...) mais bien agitées tout de même ; 1 journée à Socorro, où on a vu passer pas mal de baleines, mais plongées assez nulles, on est donc retournés à San Benedicto pour le dernier jour, avant de rejoindre Cabo San Lucas : 30 heures à nouveau, un peu plus agitées qu'à l'aller ! Côté faune, les mantas étaient au rendez-vous, pas mal de requins aussi, même si la plupart sont assez craintifs et difficiles à approcher (problème de photographe !) ; paysage assez « lunaire » : pas de corail, des rochers nus et au total une faune moins dense que ce que nous espérions. Mais c'est sans doute des appréciations de plongeurs trop gâtés !!!	We sailed after dinner : 30 hours before we could reach the first island of the archipelago : San Benedicto. Fortunately, the Pacific ocean, which, most of the time, is not really "pacific" will be very quiet : a little surge, but we had a very smooth journey ... All the week long, the sea will be calm ! Cool ! The weather was fine : air 30°C, water 24°C, no need to bring a semi-dry or dry suit ... 2 days - 8 dives in San Benedicto, 2 days - 7 dives in Roca Partida, with rather good sea conditions (on that site which is famous for its strong currents -even vortex-, its surge often so strong that safety stops around 5m are almost impossible), but however rather rough ; 1 day in Socorro, where we saw a lot of humpback whales, but diving there wasn't good so we decided to go back to San Benedicto for the last day, before sailing back to Cabo San Lucas : again 30 hours, much rougher than the onward journey ! What about fauna ? Well, manta rays were here ok, a lot of sharks as well, even if most of them are rather shy and quite difficult to approach (a typical photographer problem !) ; underwater landscape is rather "lunar" : no coral, just bare rocks and fewer fishes than we expected. But all this is probably just the view of the spoiled divers that we are !!!

Par ailleurs les conditions de plongée rendaient la photo assez difficile : le courant et la houle ne facilitent pas cadrage et mise au point et les eaux étaient en général très opalescentes avec beaucoup de particules en suspension ; j’ai tout de même rapporté une centaine de photos sympas, mais c’est relativement peu en une vingtaine de plongées : je suis plusieurs fois remonté en n’ayant pris que trois ou quatre photos, voire aucune !	The diving conditions were not ideal for underwater photography : unpredictible currents and swell didn't make easier centering and focusing, and the water were most of the time quite "foggy" with a lot of particles in suspension ; I will propose here around 100 not so bad pictures, but after 20 dives, it's a very small number. More than once, did I come out of the water having shot only 3 or 4 photos, sometimes even none !

Photos prises au Nikon D70 en caisson Ikelite TTL : seule optique utilisée, le zoom Nikkor 12-24mm DX et deux flashes Ikelite DS 125 utilisés en TTL.
