St. JOHN'S REEF (May 2004)

Une semaine de croisière, organisée avec H2O Voyages et DUNE, sur St. John's Reef, où l'on trouve quelques uns des plus beaux récifs coralliens de la Mer Rouge.

St. John's est situé à l'extrême sud de l'Egypte, à la frontière du Soudan et est accessible de  Hamata, après 5 bonnes heures de bus au départ d'Hurghada (seulement 1h30 si on a la chance d'atterrir à Marsa Alam).

On passera donc sur les trajets et transferts, via Hurghada, pour le moins éprouvants, pour évoquer plutôt les merveilles de cette croisière ...

Le bateau d'abord, le MY Heaven Pioneer. Très beau bateau de taille moyenne (8 cabines) très confortable : douches et WC dans toutes les cabines, climatisation individuelle, ... A bord, une hôtesse anglaise, Helen, très sympa et les deux guides DUNE, français, Hubert et Gisèle Le Phat, également très sympas et, ce qui ne gâche rien, tout à fait compétents : organisation des plongées et briefings parfaits !

Sécu excellente : bloc au pendeur, deux zodiacs qui patrouillent en permanence sur les sites, ... Possibilité de plongées Nitrox (j'ai fait toutes les plongées au Nitrox), mélange au choix (!), mais un peu cher : 7€ par plongée si mélange inférieur ou égal à EAN36, 10 € au-delà.

16 plongées étaient proposées (dont une "crépusculaire" et une de nuit) ; j'en ai fait 14.

Côté météo : temps beau et chaud, beaucoup de vent tout de même, mer assez formée, d'où certaines mises à l'eau zodiac un peu "rock n' roll", mais peu ou pas de courant, donc plongées "faciles". Visi bonne à très bonne, eau à 26°C.

Côté faune : le gros était au rendez-vous sur les plongées les plus matinales (1ère plongée : 6h15-6h30) : requins gris, requins pointes blanches, thons, mais aussi requins marteaux et mantas (pas de longimanus, ni de soyeux, ni de renard ... On n'est pas aux Brothers !). Et bien entendu toute la faune corallienne habituelle, sur des massifs coralliens la plupart du temps en excellent état.

Au total, conditions à peu près parfaites à tout point de vue (sauf les transferts !!).

Je n'avais pas emporté mon Nikon F90X, mon caisson Hugy et mes deux flashes pour faire de la photo argentique ; j'ai préféré continuer mes tests en numérique, avec le petit SONY DSC-P9 et son caisson dédié. Une innovation : en plus de l'usage « habituel », avec filtre orangé et sans flash, je l'ai testé, surtout dans les canyons et les labyrinthes, nombreux sur St. John's, équipé de l'additif Sea&Sea 16mm du Motor Marine MMIIEX -du coup, sans filtre orangé- pour des ambiances bleutées : résultat sympa !

J'ai aussi et surtout fait pas mal de vidéo avec un caméscope SONY PC-100 en caisson Ikelite, sans éclairage externe.

A one week cruise, organized with  H2O Voyages and DUNE dive center, to St. John's Reef, wher one can find some of the most beautiful coral reefs of the Red Sea.

St. John's is located in the far south of Egypt, close to the Sudanese border. You can board the live aboard vessels in Hamata (5 hours by bus from Hurghada ; only 1h30 if you're lucky enough to land in Masa Alam).

We'll skip the painful journeys and transfers, via Hurghada, and will only concentrate on the marvels of this St. John's Reef cruise ...

The vessel, first, the MY Heaven Pioneer. Very nice middle-sized boat (8 cabins) very cosy : showers and toilets in every cabin, invividual A.C., ... On board, an English hostess, Helen,very nice and helpful and the two Dune Dive Masters, both of them French, Hubert and Gisele Le Phat, equally nice, helpful and competent : diving organization and briefings were simply perfect !

Security was excellent : tank under the boat, two zodiacs were "patrolling" the dive sites as long as there were divers in the water. Nitrox is available on board, an you can choose your own mix : 7 € per dive for any mix under EAN36, 10 € above.

16 dives were planned (including one "dusk dive" and one "night dive") ; I did "only" 14.

The weather was fine, quite warm but windy, the sea was rather rough, so riding the zodiacs was sometimes a bit bumpy. Almost no current, so all the dives were quite easy. Very good vivibility. Water temperature : 26°C.

The fauna : big fishes were there all right (mainly for the very first morning dive - about 6 a.m.) : grey reef sharks, whitetip sharks, tunas, but also hammerheads and manta rays (no longimanus, nor silky sharks, nor thresher sharks ... We're not at the Brothers Island !). And of course all the usual coral fishes, on very healthy coral reefs.

Eventually, diving conditions as close to perfection as possible (except tranfers !!).

I didn't bring my Nikon F90X, its Hugy housing and my two big strobes to shoot argentic pictures ; I chose to continue to test the possibilities of the small SONY DSC-P9 digital camera, in its dedicated housing. I tried something new : I used it as usual with the orange filter and no strobe (and no external light), but I also tried the 16mm wide-angle adapter, originally built for the Sea&Sea MMIIex, that you can mount (with a specific ring) on the SONY housing. No filter used, there, but those "blue" pics are quite interesting !

I also shot a few video clips, using a SONY PC-100 camcorder in an Ikelite housing ; no external light used.
