AUSTRALIE - AUSTRALIA (Aug 2004)
Great Barrier Reef : Ribbon Reef - Cod Hole
|
4 weeks in Australia ; this trip was not only diving oriented. We landed in Perth and spent the first 9 days exploring the fantastic beaches of the Leeuwin National Park - quite windy and rainy, but truly wonderful - and, of course some of the most famous wineries of Western Australia. A half-day out at sea in Augusta to watch the humpback whales (mother and calf) ... Then, a short flight to Broome and the world famous Cable Beach, after that, 8-day adventure through the Kimberleys : 4WD bus, bush camping, swimming in awesome gorges and waterfalls ; down to the Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle) then driving north up to Darwin. 8 days in the middle of nowhere - but a really superb nowhere ! - ; most of the time driving on dust roads, but more than 3000 km in 8 days is quite tiring ... From Darwin, another flight to Cairns, to board the Supersport, one of the three vessels of Mike Ball fleet : a 3-day, 4-night diving cruise from Cairns to Lizard Island, along the famous Ribbon Reef, probably one of the best coral reefs in the world. A lot of very healthy hard coral (not too much soft coral). 14 dives were proposed ( ... yes ... in 3 days time !) ; 11 day dives, one dusk dive and two night dives. I only (?) did 11 dives, all the dives on EAN 32 ! Some of the dive sites are really worth the trip : Steve's Bommie, Pixie Pinnacle, Vertical Gardens, Challenger Bay and, of course, the "world famous" Cod Hole, where one can meet a few "potato cod" really easy going (due to feeding ...). Diving organization really superb, very comfortable cabins, excellent food, friendly and helpful staff ; not really cheap, but abolutely perfect, the only thing we might regret is that it is very short ! We arrived at Lizard island, magnificent island, 5* resort, were we stayed 3 nights before flying back to Paris. I had brought my Nikon F90X camera with its housing and 2 substrobes, unfortunately, I had a lot of problems : one of my strobes sometimes didn't trigger off, and my shutter speed selector didn't work at all, so I couldn't change the shutter speed while in the water ; not really ideal. I managed to bring back a few not so bad pictures. Here they are ...
